We are excited about all of the ways of connecting to God and others in our church. Worship is the first place. Choose either the nontraditional service from 8:45 - 9:30 am or the formal/traditional one 11:00 - noon. We have wonderful opportunities for all ages to engage their lives with the word of God during the Sunday School time 9:45 -10:45 am (some classes begin at 10 am). We also have youth events on Sunday nights from 5 - 7 pm. On Wednesday nights there is a dinner that begins at 5:15 in the Family Life Center (reservations required by noon Tuesday) as well as Middle School, children and adult classes and prayer gatherings.

We are a growing church. We are growing in spiritual maturity as well as record new members and baptisms. Growth occurs through worship, missions, discipleship, ministry opportunities and fellowship events. This is a place where God in Jesus are the center of all we are and all we do. We are diverse with members who grew up in this area, in the northeast, others are from Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam. We have a couple that served as missionaries to Japan for around 30 years. We have some who are Democrats, others who are Republicans. We have rich and poor. We are one body in Christ, men and women called to serve Jesus and able to respond to God's call in any area of ministry (whether male or female)!

Please call one of our ministers for an opportunity to talk about what God is doing here and what God's vision is for our immediate future. God wants you to be a part of a body of Christ. Won't you consider this congregation as you seek to be blessed and be a blessing?

Welcome

It is amazing how fast time has flown. Summer is here and Dr. Sharon and Wade have the children at Centri-Kids this week. Dr. Richard has the youth in Tennessee at Appalachian Outreach and we are planning for a marvelous day of worship and fellowship this Sunday on July 4th. Please make plans to worship with us at the one combined service at 10:30 this Sunday. We will observe Communion and experience special Independence Day music. Then Sunday afternoon, at 5 pm, we will meet for hot dogs and hamburgers and then walk (or ride) together down to Union Point for the evening festivities. Please bring your own lawn chairs or blanket to sit on at the park.
Feel free to contact the church for any questions about upcoming events and please know that there is a place for you here in this community of faith and worship.
(252) 638-5691.
Dr. Fitzgerald

Worship, Work and Witness described the day!

It is hard to believe that our Bicentennial celebration has finally come and gone. It was a great day of worship, work and witness. It is what First Baptist Church of New Bern has done for two hundred years and what continues to define us so uniquely among Baptists of all brands.

We worshiped together in the traditional high church mode with awesome times of remembering our history and what God has done through the years, thanks to Miss Jane Marshall Jenkins. We also had wonderful liturgy so carefully honed out precisely by Rev. Barry Templeton and ministerial staff. There was never a worry about the influx of young families and what would happen to their infants and children with Dr. Sharon Bender and her husband Wade at the helm. The worship music, with organ fanfare and Dr. Perry Smith singing, as well as the newly commissioned anthem that was sung, as well as Bob Garver singing at the dedication of the Memorial Garden brought tears to your pastors eyes. Dr. Randall Lolley reminded us of our call to recognize the honor of being the First Baptist Church in New Bern, and what a wonderful and challenging message it was. Worship was inspiring. Contemplative and traditional worship has been a defining hallmark of our church through the years and continues to be so today, even in our attempt to make our nontraditional worship uniquely a service of thoughtful worship rather than “just” praise and singing.

Work was the name of the game for feeding the over four hundred members and guests that attended the event. I was so proud to gaze across the Family Life Center and observe the coordinated effort of so many youth and adults serving the host of believers that were gathered to share food and fellowship around the tables of God. Work has been a defining force of our church through the years and continues to be so today. Great work went into making the Bicentennial possible and the list of those who contributed is far too long to highlight here. The worship, the Garden, the food and the church plant are all testaments of honor to our God and Savior.

Finally, not only did we worship and work, but we witnessed to one another. From the witness of Scripture being read in the language of our new Chin refugees from Myanmar and in English, to the witness of theology proclaimed through music and prayer, to the proclaimed word by a former seminary president in our state, we witnessed the power and presence of God Almighty. Ken Bryant reminded us of the miracles God still performs in the lives of those who seek God with all their hearts, minds and souls. Again, tears filled my eyes as Ken shared his story of misdiagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and then the correcting diagnosis and treatment that not only gave him back his mind and body, but increased his witness. Our worship and work only inspire us to go out into the world for as many years as God allows to share our witness of the love and power of a God who will not let us alone until all the sheep have come home to pasture in His fields.

Thank you Lord, and people of God for a day to remember, a day of Worship, Work and Witness that challenge us to live so in the days to come.

Dr. Fitzgerald

Bicentennial Worship

It is hard to believe that we have made it to our Bicentennial Celebration. The year leading up to this event has offered inspired messages and wonderful music, as well as historic recitations regarding our rich history and deep faith. The Memorial Garden is complete and is a fitting blessing to both the church, the kingdom of God, and the blessing to the local community. Most importantly, the membership continues to grow in all age categories. We are seeing many children, young families, as well as refugees and middle aged and senior adults growing in their relationship with God, each other and neighbor.
Please come and worship with us and enable a blessing of reciprocity in experiencing the living and loving presence of God, Christ and the Spirit.
Dr. Fitzgerald

Welcome to First Baptist Church, New Bern

where we have been worshiping and witnessing to the love of God for 200 years. Here they are:
Vision Statement: First We Love
Mission Statement: First, before anything else, we, the congregation of First Baptist Church New Bern, from youngest to oldest, love God, others and self (as modeled by Jesus).
It is our express goal to be a congregation of those who are changed the the grace of God's love poured out for us in His gift of His only Son, Jesus Christ. Once we accept this love and forgiveness of our sins, then we should be changed and blessed to be a blessing of love and grace to others. This also changes the way that we treat our own bodies, minds and souls -- with holiness and honor as temples of God's Holy Spirit.

It is a great blessing to be a part of a congregation that first looks outward to God and others prior to looking to fulfill our own needs. We seek to develop relationships with God and neighbor by listening and learning, so that we can link the love and grace of God appropriately, and relationally. That works in our relationships outside the church as well as our relationships with each other inside the church.

Visit our church and witness love in action during this season of Lent, ascending the hill to Jerusalem, where the cross waits, and where eternal life meets us in the person of Jesus.

Formula for Peace through Thanksgiving & Christmas

I would challenge you to receive God's greatest gifts during the coming season of Thanksgiving and Christmas -- the gift of grace! Remember that in Philippians 4:4-9 we are told to "be anxious in nothing, be prayerful in everything, and to be thankful in anything, and then peace -- the peace of God that passes all understanding and the God of peace will be with you." Have you tasted that peace? If so, share it, give it away! They are all "Chin" people from former Burman, now known as Myanmar. We now have regularly attending our congregation about 20 from Myanmar and between 20 and 30 from the mountains of Vietnam, Montagnards. This makes for quite a diverse congregation at First Baptist, New Bern. Both of these people groups came here as refugees fleeing persecution for their faith and freedom. Most left behind family and friends. Post your comments regarding how you feel about them being at First Baptist, New Bern.

Welcome

As you visit with us, we hope and pray that you will either come to know God's love in Christ for the first time, or that you will grow into spritual, physical and mental maturity in your journey through life with Christ.
